Peregrine Queen And Crew

The Ship And Crew

Some ships are built to fight, others to trade, and a rare few are built to survive their captain’s sense of adventure. The Peregrine Queen was one of those.

Jonno’s Spaceship: The Peregrine Queen

A medium-range hauler, refitted beyond all reasonable specifications, the Peregrine Queen had been through asteroid storms, pirate ambushes, and at least one cosmic jellyfish encounter Jonno preferred not to remember. Its hull showed the scars: scorched plates, mismatched repairs, and a faint smell of burnt coffee that nothing could ever quite remove.

Inside, the Peregrine Queen was a jumble of practicality and charm. The cockpit, crammed with retrofitted controls, was Jonno’s command throne, patched wiring, rattling panels, and an ancient seat cushion worn perfectly to the shape of his backside. Needless to say, the ship was bigger inside than it was outside.

Its living quarters were small but functional: one bunk, one coffee machine, one storage locker full of mystery tools, and a small observation window where Jonno sometimes watched the stars while plotting his next move.

The ship had been with him longer than most friendships, and was as cantankerous as he was. Whenever Jonno thought about trading her for something newer, the Peregrine Queen seemed to develop a fresh new rattle, as if to protest.
For Jonno, it was home. Stubborn, patched-up, but always ready to fly, just like him.

Jonno

Jonno is a retired planetary surveyor, reluctant hero, and all-round cosmic fixer. Born on a mining colony orbiting a dim brown dwarf, he grew up in the clatter and clang of mining rigs, learning how to repair engines, calm down rowdy miners, and dodge debt collectors before he was tall enough to see over a cargo crate. Those rough early lessons gave him a keen eye for trouble and a practical streak that has served him well across the years.

His career as a surveyor taught him how to read shifting ground, navigate by instinct, and trust his gut, skills he soon turned to a different sort of work, helping people out of cosmic-sized jams no one else wanted to touch. From runaway genetically modified ostriches to missing cargo ships and even the occasional bureaucratic jellyfish, Jonno has a reputation for getting the job done, no matter how bizarre the problem.

He flies the Peregrine Queen, a battered but loyal medium-hauler with a hull patched more times than he can count. Though it rattles and hums in all the wrong places, the ship has become his refuge and lifeline, holding together against pirate attacks, cosmic storms, and station inspections by sheer willpower and a toolkit held together with leftover survey tape.

Jonno’s defining vice, or perhaps his only virtue, is his bottomless appetite for strong tea, which he insists sharpens his wits and steels his resolve. “Never trust a hero running on bad tea,” he likes to say. There’s always a steaming mug of boost juice (his name for an eye-watering black brew) within reach, fuelling every risky salvage, delicate negotiation, or dash through a customs checkpoint.

He is practical, stubborn, and sometimes a touch too confident for his own good, but there is a deep, unshakable sense of fairness beneath that weather-beaten, tea-fuelled exterior. He might grumble about incompetent port officials or complain about station taxes, but when lives are on the line, he will always do his best to set things right, or at least patch things up enough to keep flying another day.
When things go wrong beyond the belt, and they always do, Jonno is the man you call.

Mara

Mara is Jonno’s trusted co-pilot and partner aboard the Peregrine Queen. Originally a salvage pilot working the battered lanes near Ganymede, Mara developed a reputation for sharp thinking, calm under pressure, and a warmth that made even the worst situations feel survivable. Her laugh is quick, genuine, and carries the quiet confidence of someone who has seen every cosmic mishap and chosen to grin at it rather than give in.

She first crossed Jonno’s path at a half-functioning refuelling station, where her skills rescuing damaged ships and untangling questionable salvage made a lasting impression. They worked together on and off, building trust through countless chaotic repairs, tight escapes, and half-baked rescue jobs. Jonno soon realised that Mara understood ships the way some people understand close friends, tending to them with patience and respect, and, critically, could always brew a proper cup of tea, no matter the state of the gravity generator.

Middle-aged, athletic, and practical in both her style and mindset, Mara prefers a fitted jumpsuit that balances feminine confidence with utility. Her dark brown hair, cut short in a pixie style, suits both the hard vacuum of salvage work and the occasional half-luxury break when the galaxy allows.

While Jonno holds the captain’s chair, Mara serves as co-pilot with full piloting certification and a sharp command of systems. Her steady judgement, dry humour, and fearless acceptance of the universe’s unpredictability make her the perfect complement to Jonno’s sometimes reckless style.

Their partnership is built on genuine respect, quiet admiration, and more than a few mugs of strong tea shared under distant stars.
